What is a Cubic Meter?

Cubic meter or CBM is a unit of volume commonly used in shipping to measure the space that goods occupy. It is crucial for calculating freight costs, particularly in sea and air shipping, where charges are often based on the volume rather than just the weight of the cargo. Accurately calculating CBM helps shippers and carriers determine the most efficient and cost-effective means of transporting goods.

How is CBM calculated?

CBM is calculated by multiplying the length, width, and height of a package or container in meters, i.e. CBM = Length (m) × Width (m) × Height (m).

For irregularly shaped packages, the smallest rectangular volume that can completely enclose the object is used for the calculation to ensure that all space the cargo occupies is accounted for in shipping and storage planning.
